Performance Attribution Software Compared: Institutional Systems and Options for Individuals

Short answer

Performance attribution software splits a portfolio’s return against a benchmark into the decisions that produced it, usually allocation and selection effects, and for bonds into rate, curve and spread effects. The established systems are FactSet Portfolio Analysis, Bloomberg PORT, MSCI’s Barra-based attribution, Confluence Revolution, SS&C Sylvan, BlackRock Aladdin and Morningstar Direct. All are sold to asset managers, asset owners or consultants through a demo or sales call, and none publishes a price. Individuals have a much shorter list: Portfolio Visualizer for factor attribution on funds, Interactive Brokers PortfolioAnalyst for its own clients, and decision-level tools such as Pure Benchmarks.

Most results for performance attribution software are institutional systems, and that is not an accident of search. Attribution at scale needs holdings history, benchmark constituents and clean pricing for every security, which is why it has traditionally been sold to asset managers and pension funds as part of a larger analytics or risk platform. This page compares the main systems on what they attribute, who buys them and how they are priced, then covers what an individual investor can actually use.

What performance attribution software does

At its core, attribution software takes a portfolio and a benchmark, both broken into groups such as sectors, countries or asset classes, and explains the return difference between them. Equity attribution usually follows the Brinson approach, splitting the gap into allocation, selection and interaction effects. Fixed income attribution works differently, assigning return to yield-curve moves, spread changes, carry and currency. Factor-based attribution uses a risk model and explains returns through exposures such as value, size or momentum.

The platform systems: FactSet, Bloomberg and MSCI

FactSet Portfolio Analysis covers equity attribution including the Brinson-Fachler model, fixed income attribution and multi-asset portfolios that include private markets, with risk-based attribution alongside. Bloomberg PORT runs inside the Bloomberg Terminal and offers equity, fixed income and multi-asset hybrid attribution. MSCI sells attribution built on its Barra risk models, covering Brinson, fixed income and factor-based methods for asset managers, asset owners and performance teams. All three are bought as part of a wider data and analytics relationship.

Dedicated performance measurement systems

Confluence Revolution, formerly sold under the StatPro name, is a dedicated performance measurement and attribution platform used by asset managers, asset owners, asset servicers and consultants, with multi-level and hybrid attribution models including fixed income. SS&C Sylvan is a performance measurement system that lists more than 20 attribution methods plus user-defined ones across currencies and asset classes. These suit firms that need a performance team’s workflow rather than a front-office analytics screen.

Whole-firm platforms: Aladdin and Morningstar Direct

BlackRock Aladdin includes attribution inside a platform that also runs portfolio management, trading and risk, with private-asset attribution through eFront. It is sold to asset managers, pension funds, insurers, banks and wealth managers. Morningstar Direct offers equity attribution and a total portfolio attribution view that separates asset allocation from manager selection, which is useful for multi-manager portfolios and fund-of-funds analysis.

How to choose between them

Start with asset classes: a bond-heavy book needs proper fixed income attribution, not Brinson applied to bond sectors. Then look at where your holdings and benchmark data already live, because attribution quality depends on the data feeding it, and a system already connected to your accounting or risk platform avoids a reconciliation project. Finally, decide whether the output is for a performance team, which needs audit trails and GIPS-style workflows, or for portfolio managers, who need fast interactive views.

What individual investors can use instead

None of the institutional systems sells to individuals. Portfolio Visualizer offers factor performance attribution that regresses a fund’s or ETF’s returns on factor returns, with a free plan and paid plans published at $30 and $55 a month billed annually. Interactive Brokers clients get attribution against a benchmark in the free PortfolioAnalyst tool. Pure Benchmarks, our own product, runs decision-level attribution on linked brokerage and retirement accounts, scoring each buy and sell against the portfolio you held before it. It does not produce a Brinson decomposition.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best performance attribution software?

It depends on the asset classes and the team. FactSet, Bloomberg PORT and MSCI cover equity, fixed income and factor attribution as part of wider analytics platforms. Confluence Revolution and SS&C Sylvan are dedicated performance measurement systems. Aladdin suits firms already running on it. All are institutional and quote-priced.

How much does performance attribution software cost?

Institutional vendors, including FactSet, Bloomberg, MSCI, Confluence, SS&C, BlackRock and Morningstar Direct, do not publish prices and sell through a demo or sales call. Portfolio Visualizer publishes a free plan and paid plans at $30 and $55 a month billed annually. Pure Benchmarks is free for individual investors.

What software does fixed income attribution?

FactSet, Bloomberg PORT, MSCI, Confluence Revolution and BlackRock Aladdin all state fixed income attribution capabilities. Fixed income attribution assigns return to yield-curve, spread, carry and currency effects rather than to sector weights.

What is the difference between Brinson and factor-based attribution?

Brinson attribution explains the return gap against a benchmark through allocation and selection across groups such as sectors. Factor-based attribution uses a risk model to explain returns through exposures such as value, size, momentum or interest-rate sensitivity.

Is there performance attribution software for individual investors?

A few options exist. Portfolio Visualizer offers factor attribution for funds and ETFs, Interactive Brokers clients have free attribution in PortfolioAnalyst, and Pure Benchmarks, our own product, scores each of your buys and sells against the portfolio you held before it on a free account.

Does attribution software show whether my trades added value?

Not directly. Brinson and factor attribution explain where a period’s return came from relative to a benchmark. To know whether a specific trade was worth making, compare the portfolio after the trade with the portfolio you would have kept without it, which is what decision-level attribution does.
